Chapter 1
When the first letter arrived in her office Sam Worth thought it was a joke. Still she called the chief of police and asked him to come by. It didn’t take long before he showed up.
“What have you got for me, Sam?” he asked coming through the door.
“I got a weird letter today,” she replied. “I don’t know if it’s a joke or if I should take it seriously?” She pulled a sheet of paper out of her desk.
The chief could see it was already encased in plastic. “Did you dust for finger prints?”
“No, Dad. I slipped it into this after I read it,” she answered. “Figured we have my prints on file so, any others will be our suspect. I have the envelope in a separate piece of plastic, although it will have the postman’s finger prints on it, too.”
“Let’s have a look.” He reached for the letter to read it. “Who does this joker think he is?”
“Got me,” Sam replied. “Says he’s been stumping you for years. What kind of open cases do you have?”
“Around here? You’ve got to be kidding. Worst case we get is hauling in some drunk to sleep it off,” he answered. “Wait, there was a hit and run two years ago. Just a broken leg, but we never did find who did it. Do you think?”
“Couldn’t hurt to pull the file and look at it again,” she suggested with a shrug.
“I’m going to take this and get as much information as we can from it,” he told her.
“Meantime, I’m going to check out everyone connected to the Bakersfield Estate,” Sam said.          “I don’t know much about them, except they have the mansion on Pine Ridge overlooking the river.”
“Nice couple,” Dad replied. “I think their kids are grown and moved away. Come every year for Thanksgiving and stay through Christmas with the grandkids. There’s a gardener, a cook, and possibly a maid.”
“I’ll let you know what I find,” she told him.
He left and Sam sat at her computer. She was an expert at data gathering. If anything suspicious was to be found, she would find it.
